Note, while the messages on this page will be of special interest to pastors/aspiring pastors, generally, none are so technical or difficult as to be unedifying to all the people of God. Many were delivered on Lord's Day's to the entire congregation, or during the adult Sabbath School hour.

Pastor Martin delivered his "Pastoral Theology Lectures" to the Trinity Ministerial Academy students a number of times over a period of years. The messages on this page were generally given in the 1980's. Since however he was always rethinking, reworking, adding/subtracting, and fine-tuning the materials each time they were presented, some lectures from other years have also been included, as they were available, and are designated by a linked maroon-colored asterisk. It is recommended that these 'duplicate' messages not be used as substitutes however, but as supplements, because although the titles may be the same, the place where he began/left off in one year's lecture does not always coincide with where he began/left off in a different year, and thus some vital points can be missed. (A note about the messages going from 1 to 84: the "Biblical Call" section [#84-94] was not a part of the original curriculum – it was introduced in later years, and should be inserted at this location. The lectures are laid out and numbered below exactly as they are found in the Trinity Pulpit Catalog.)

Appointing Elders in Every Church (Acts 14:23-28) - Robert Martin

What kind of men does the church draw to and set apart for its official ministry? The answer to this question provides a sure index of the state of that church. In the light of this fact, few things are of greater importance in the practical life of any congregation or denomination than its understanding of what constitutes a Biblical call to the work of the ministry. Those who are vitally concerned with raising the standard of general godliness and piety in our churches must be concerned with raising the standard for entrance into the Christian ministry.
