Inclusion of this section was not considered from the very beginning, so all of the corrected mistakes are not listed. The ones that are noted below refer to the Banner of Truth Trust “Reprinted 1987 edition ISBN 0 85151 088 4,” and may or may not apply to other editions. The sequence below is listed in the following sections: Preface, Expositions, Conclusion and Subject Index. Within each section, the more important mistakes have been placed first (wrong references, wording mistakes, etc.). Punctuation and Syntax errors (such as missing / mistaken / misplaced periods / quotation marks, etc.,) are placed second. Some of these latter may be attributable to the inking of the specific book that was used. Some of these types of mistakes were actually not so minor because they beclouded the meaning of what was being conveyed. Some of the listed corrections are guesses / suggestions / opinions. Explanations follow some of these in italics, to provide the rational which went into making the particular guesses / suggestions. Note: many of the corrections in this second category involved whether question marks and exclamation points belong before or after close-quote marks. The rational behind these types of corrections is given in some detail once, towards the beginning, but it is not repeated in each instance to conserve space. To view this explanation, click here.

Preface:

A. Reference/footnote problems:

1. Preface page iii 1st footnote: “Chapter xxxv.11” should be “Chapter xxv.11.”

2. Preface page vii page bottom: after “6” (but before the listed references), consider adding “Dr. Good,” and on page 635 of the Subject Index (under this name [“Good, – Dr.”]) changing “viii” to “vii”.

(Explanation: This correction is somewhat of a guess. The entire middle paragraph on Preface page vii is a quote and ends with the footnote designator “6”, but no mention is made regarding who made the quote (as is the normal pattern throughout the rest of the book). On page 635 of the Subject Index it says that Dr. Good has a quote on the next Preface page (viii), but no quotes from him are to be found there! Thus it seems to be somewhat reasonable to guess that the Subject Index entry should have been “vii” instead of “viii,” and that this central paragraph on page vii can be attributed to Dr. Good.)

B. Punctuation/Syntax Errors:

1. Page v last paragraph, last line: consider adding a single close quote mark, as follows, after “,, early life.’ ” (Explanation: The placement of this is a guess. There is an open-quote mark in this sentence, but a close-quote mark does not appear anywhere. There is a fairly large space between the words at the place suggested above, so perhaps the close-quote was supposed to be placed there. Conceivably however it could be placed almost anywhere in the sentence(s)/paragraph(s) that follow.)

2. Page v footnote “||” at page bottom: The period after “Theodore Mopquest” should be a comma.

A. Textual/reference/footnote problems:

1. Page 3 six lines above the verse 7 section: “Heb. xiii. 17” s.b. “Heb. xiii. 7.”

(Explanation: the word “must” is not in the Authorized Version. No other translation consulted inserts this word except for the Darby translation (which uses the word “shall” instead of “must”). This was published in 1890 however, and thus was not around when Mr. Bridges wrote his commentary. The KJV is used consistently throughout his book to head-up each expositional section, so it is hard to say why there might be a deviation here. This verse is re-quoted in the first paragraph of the exposition, and again includes the word “must”. However, nothing in his expositional comments seems to focus upon that word specifically, nor do any of the other commentators which were consulted. To maintain consistency then in using the KJV throughout, “must” was removed from both places the the electronic version.

Some of the pairs are not exact requotes so there are some variations in the themes – further complicating the process of discerning what was originally intended to be joined together. It was thought that including these guesses would be better than woodenly reproducing what are clearly mistakes in the book.)

(Explanation: This printing of the book has an unusually large space at the end of this sentence, after the word: “...strive.” This sentence begins with a single open quote mark – but it does not have a close-quote mark, so apparently a close-quote was suppposed to go into this space. Additionally, this sentence is a quote from some other author – but – there is no footnote indicator to identify him [which is the usual pattern throughout the book]. It was discovered by doing a web search that this is a quote from Richard Hooker. The last sentence of this paragraph likewise contains a second quote from Mr. Hooker, so apparently this large empty space was supposed to also contain a footnote designator [one which matches the one from the last sentence, so that Mr. Hooker can be properly identified as the author of both of these quotes]).
